New school

Standard

I haven’t posted anything in a long time…It’s because I’m back to school and I’ve been really busy.

School is great so far, even though it’s really different from my old school in the United States. Here in Brazil, instead of switching from class to class, we stay in one classroom while the teachers switch around. Elementary school is grades 1-5, middle school is grades 6-9, and high school is grades 10-12.

I don’t really have any new pictures to post, but soon, I will 🙂

School and celebrations

Standard

Today is, hmm, my fifth or sixth day in Brazil.

I didn’t do much today; I just sat around the house playing with my computer and watching TV. I shouldn’t even be blogging today, but whatever.

Anyways, I’m sad that I won’t be getting any summer vacation 😦 The school year here in Brazil is way different than it is in the US…Thankfully, we have “Sao Joao” or “Festa Junina”, a celebration/holiday that happens in July 24th.

Sao Joao is an interesting celebration. It’s very famous here in Brazil, but I’m pretty sure they have it in other countries. We celebrate it by having gatherings. During those gatherings, we dance, listen to music, eat, and play games. There is always a big campfire during the gatherings. Some common foods that are eaten during Sao Joao are pe-de-moleque (peanut candy), cocada (coconut candy), pacoca (http://comidadequinta.blogspot.com.br/2011/02/pacoca.html), bolo de fuba (a type of cake), corn, peanuts, bolo de milho (corn cake), canjica (a little like pudding), and pamonha (a corn pastry). As you can see, a lot of Brazilian food contains corn. There’s also a type of music called “forró” that is played during Sao Joao parties.

During Sao Joao, people typically wear straw hats and checkered clothing. Women almost always wear cute, ruffled dresses. You should look them up!

Changing the subject, there’s two great schools in my city, and I’m not sure which one to go to…:( I hate having to make those type of choices. I better go check their websites now…I was supposed to do that earlier, but since I procrastinate way too much, I forgot to 😛

Bye~
